Ambassador Grand launched Excerpts - The Hindu

Hindustan Motors, one of the oldest Indian car makers, today came out with a new variant of its old workhorse ‘Ambassador,’ hoping that it will help it push up its sales by nearly 29 percent to about 18,000 units during the current fiscal.

Called ‘Ambassador Grand’ the car with as many as 137 changes will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines sourced from Japan’s Isuzu Motors, the company’s Vice President (Marketing), Satish Burman, told a news conference here while announcing the launch of the new model.

While the 1.8-litre petrol engine model has been priced at Rs.4.20 lakhs, the 2-litre diesel model carries a price tag of Rs. 4.45lakhs (both ex-showroom Delhi). “We have targeted to sell 17,000-18,000 ‘Ambassador’ cars this fiscal. Last year, we had sold 14,000 units. Of this, the new variant should comprise 2,000 units,” he said.

The features which the latest variant has include power steering, power brakes and remote shift gear, new grille, transparent headlamps, body coloured bumpers besides the new Hindusan Motors logo.

Asserting that the ‘ambassador’ as a 50-year old car which is as contemporary as any other new vehicle, Mr.Burman said would be targeted at “niche” buyers such as governments, professionals, luxury hotels and for export markets. He cited “space, comfort and sturdiness” as the main selling points of an “Ambassador” car and claimed that it was the third highest selling mid-size car in the country. On the company’s future plans, he indicated that another variant of the car by the name of ‘Avigo’ would be launched sometime later this year. He said 26-28 per cent of total sales of the “Ambassador” cars come from government orders.
