Pajero - Luxury Car Production begins at HM's Chennai Car Plant at Thiruvallur

Hindustan Motors (HM) has commenced local production of "Pajero" the world-class premium sports utility vehicle (SUV) of Mitsubishi, Japan.

The first batch of the locally assembled economical variants of Pajero were rolled out from HM's manufacturing facility at Thiruvallur, about 50 km from Chennai, this evening.

The two variants, Pajero GL and Pajero GLX, fitted with a 2.8 litre intercooled turbocharged diesel engine are priced at Rs 19.7 lakhs and Rs 23.7 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi ) respectively, against over Rs 30 lakhs for the imported completely- built units (CBU) of Pajero introduced in the Indian market a few months ago The company has invested around Rs 12 crore in setting up an exclusive body shop and assembling line for Pajero at the Thiruvallur facility which was set up four years ago for the production of Lancer" the company's mid size sedan. Speaking to media persons on the occasion, A. Sankaranarayanan, managing director, HML said the present capacity of the Pajero assembling facility at the plant was four units a day and the company hoped to sell at least 1,200 units of locally assembled Pajero variants in the first year. He said indigenisation of Pajero would be taken up only later after evaluating the cost factors and demand he said, adding the company would continue with marketing of imported Pajero CBUs. He said 33 of them are on the Indian roads now.
